Frequently asked questions

How do I cite an online newspaper article in APA 7?
Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Title of article. Title of Newspaper. Publisher URL. APA 7 asks for a retrieval date only when the page is built to keep changing, such as a live blog. Many departmental handouts still want an access date on every URL — add it if yours does.
How do I cite a news article with no author?
Move the title into the author position and, in the text, cite the first few words of the title plus the year. If a wire service signed the piece (Reuters, dpa, Keystone-SDA, AP), the agency is the author. 'No author' or 'Anonymous' is the wrong fix unless the article is actually signed that way.
Can I cite a newspaper article in a thesis?
Yes, as evidence that something was reported or argued in that outlet. No, as a stand-in for the study, statistic, or judgment the article only summarises — cite that underlying source. An opinion piece documents a view, not a fact.
