Frequently asked questions

What are the main changes from APA 6 to APA 7?
Three things stand out: (1) three or more authors are abbreviated with 'et al.' from the very first citation — no more listing all names the first time; (2) the publisher location is dropped from book references — only the publisher name remains; (3) DOIs are written as full URLs (https://doi.org/…) instead of 'doi:' or 'DOI:' prefixes.
When do I use 'et al.' in APA 7?
Starting with three authors — from the first citation onwards. A work by Schmidt, Mueller, and Weber is cited as 'Schmidt et al. (2022)' every time, including the first mention. APA 6 still required listing all authors on first mention; APA 7 removed that distinction entirely.
Do I need a page number when paraphrasing in APA 7?
Not formally required, but strongly recommended. APA 7 says to include a page number whenever it helps the reader locate the passage in the source. In a thesis, that is almost always the case — add it.
