In the final weeks before submitting a bachelor’s or master’s thesis, most students reach for two tool categories: AI proofreading (language, style, plagiarism checking, structural suggestions) and citation checking (verifying that every citation accurately reflects what the source says). The two are often lumped together — but they solve very different problems. Anyone who uses only one in the final stretch, and picks the wrong one, is taking a real risk.
What AI proofreading does — and what it doesn’t
AI proofreading is an automated editing step. Tools like PaperCheck, academic writing bots, or newer providers in the DACH region typically promise the same package:
- Language checking — grammar, spelling, punctuation, stylistic inconsistencies, word repetitions
- Structural feedback — missing transitions, weak organisation, unclear lines of argument (“stringency”)
- Plagiarism checking — matching your text against a web index for copied passages
- Citation style check — whether APA, Harvard, Chicago, etc. are used formally correctly
- General feedback — sometimes even mock defence questions or an examiner-style assessment
That’s a lot — and genuinely useful for most theses. But: AI proofreading never sees your sources. It doesn’t know what’s in the PDFs you’ve stored in Zotero. It can’t tell you whether the claim “Mueller (2019) shows that X doubles the Y rate” actually comes from Mueller (2019) — or whether you simply read something different there.
What citation checking does
A citation checker — and this is how Acurio works — flips the process. It reads your cited source PDFs alongside your text and verifies that every cited claim accurately reflects what the source says. For each citation you get:
- Claim and evidence. Which sentence in your thesis, which passage in the source.
- Verdict. Supported, partially supported, or unsupported — with a confidence score.
- Excerpt. A verbatim passage from the source PDF on which the verdict rests.
- Suggestion. If a better source exists in your Zotero library, it will be recommended.

When one is enough — and when you need both
There are three scenarios that determine what you need:
- Carefully researched, every citation manually cross-checked. AI proofreading is enough. Polish the language, run the plagiarism safety scan, submit.
- Written quickly, many Zotero sources pulled in without verification. Citation checking comes first. Secure the evidence chain, then run AI proofreading over the language.

What happens with a false citation — and why plagiarism tools don’t catch it
A plagiarism tool looks at two texts and asks: do they resemble each other? If you write a fabricated or reinterpreted claim with a correct-looking reference, nothing has been copied — the plagiarism scan stays green. At the defence, or during a spot-check by your supervisor, it surfaces anyway: your examiners look up the source and don’t find the claim there. When that happens, it’s hard to explain — no matter how clean your AI proofreading was.

Practical advice for the final stretch
