The question “should I have my bachelor’s thesis checked?” has about a dozen answers in 2026, because AI tools don’t all do the same thing — but they all sound as if they do. This post sorts four tool categories by the specific problem each solves, and shows the order in which it makes sense to use them.
What you actually want checked
Before you open any tool, write down what you want to verify. For a bachelor’s or master’s thesis there are four risk axes:
- Language and style — grammar, spelling, readability, consistency.
- Plagiarism — verbatim or paraphrased use of someone else’s text without attribution.
- Citation errors — claims you reference but that never appeared in the cited source.
- Defence readiness — do you know the weaknesses an examiner will find?
No single tool covers all four. Don’t let that frustrate you — it’s more of a reason to think of them as modular steps.
The four tool categories
1. AI proofreading (e.g. PaperCheck, Mentorium)
What it does: Language checking, style correction, structural hints, web plagiarism detection, citation-style feedback.
Strength: You get a polished linguistic correction within minutes. For students who don’t write in their first language, this is often decisive.
Gap: It doesn’t read your sources. If your thesis cites Mueller (2019, p. 47), the AI proofreader knows nothing about Mueller (2019) — the claim can be factually wrong while sounding perfectly written.
When to use it: Final stage, after you’ve verified your citations substantively.
2. Citation checking against your own library (Acurio)
What it does: Reads the source PDFs from your Zotero library and checks every citation to see whether the claim is actually supported by the cited source. Marks every citation as supported, partially supported, or unsupported — with verbatim source excerpts and a confidence score.
Strength: Closes the gap no other tool fills. Citation errors, swapped page numbers, and AI-hallucinated references are caught. Multiple language models judge in parallel; when they disagree, a dedicated judge resolves the conflict in a single pass.
Gap: Doesn’t check language, plagiarism, or a web index. Requires a cleanly maintained Zotero library.
When to use it: First final check after the manuscript is complete. More background in AI against source hallucinations.
3. Plagiarism scanning (university scanner, Turnitin, PlagScan)
What it does: Compares your text character by character against a large web index and databases of other academic papers. Flags passages that match existing sources.
Strength: The only reliable way to catch verbatim borrowings. Mandatory or at least standard at most universities.
Gap: Sees only textual overlap. If you include a reinterpreted claim with a correct reference, the scan comes back clean — even if the citation is factually wrong. See Plagiarism vs. citation error.
When to use it: Mandatory step. Most of the time the scan runs automatically through the examinations office — you can run your own preview version to be sure before submission.
4. Defence preparation (mock-defence tools, GPT-based question generators)
What it does: Reads your thesis and generates possible viva questions, weak argumentative spots, and critical follow-up questions.
Strength: Useful in the last 48 hours before the defence — you don’t walk in cold.
Gap: The quality of questions depends heavily on the model used; many questions are superficial when the tool doesn’t know your sources.
When to use it: Final week, alongside the actual defence preparation with your supervisor.
Recommended order in the last 10 days
When the thesis is substantively complete:
- Days 10–8: Acurio citation check. Correct all red and yellow findings.
- Days 7–5: AI proofreading for language and style. Allow time for structural feedback too.
- Days 4–3: Plagiarism scan (your own preview, before the mandatory one).
- Days 2–1: Defence question tool optional. Mock defence with a fellow student or supervisor.
In this order, each tool finds what only it can find — and you won’t spend hours polishing language in a passage that then gets rejected on substantive grounds.
What Acurio deliberately doesn’t do
We don’t do AI proofreading. We don’t do plagiarism checking. Both are done well by others — we wouldn’t do them better. What we do, no other tool does in this depth: the substantive check of every citation against the real source. If you want to see what that looks like in practice, try it — the first citations are checked in minutes.
