Two days before the deadline, Lena opened her bibliography one last time. 23 entries, neatly alphabetised, Zotero had formatted everything for her. She clicked the seventh entry, a chapter in an edited volume on organisational sociology, and searched the title in Google Scholar. Nothing. She searched her library catalogue. Nothing. The edited volume existed; the chapter in it did not. She had copied it in November from a reading list a chatbot put together, and had cited it seven times since.
This is no longer an unusual case. It is the ordinary one.
You probably already know you should check your bibliography. What is usually missing is a procedure that does not eat two hours. This article gives you one: four classes of error, a 30-minute routine, and a schedule that puts the check where you can still act on what it finds.
In short: To check a term paper bibliography, first mark every entry you never read in full. For those, resolve the DOI at doi.org, search the rest as an exact title in Google Scholar and your library catalogue, then read the supporting passages for your central claims. For 20 to 25 sources this takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Why a term paper needs a different check than a thesis
For a thesis you have three months. You read every source because you need it to fill 40 pages. Most of what ends up in the bibliography actually passed through your hands.
A term paper works differently. Fifteen pages, six weeks alongside four other modules, and the standard stays the same: academically supported. The result is a bibliography where a substantial share of the entries came in second-hand, from reading lists, from other people’s footnotes, from lecture slides, from a chat log.
Those entries are the risk. Not because you were dishonest, but because you never verified them yourself.
The practical consequence: you do not need to check your whole bibliography. You need to check the entries you never saw in full. In a typical term paper that is six to ten of them.

The four classes of bibliography error
Not every error carries the same weight, and not every error gets checked. Sort your problems before you fix them.

Most students spend their time on class 1, because it is visible. What actually gets checked is class 3 and 4, because a marker reads your central references against the original, and a nonexistent title is obvious the moment they look.

Step by step: 30 minutes for your bibliography
Step 1: Split the list (3 minutes)
Go through your bibliography and mark every entry:
- R = read. You had the PDF or the book open.
- S = second-hand. From a list, a footnote, a slide, a chat.
Only the S entries go through the next steps. In a 15-page paper that is usually six to ten.
Step 2: Resolve the DOIs (5 minutes)
For every S entry that has a DOI, paste it into doi.org. Three possible outcomes:
- Lands on the right paper → the entry is clean.
- Lands on a different paper → metadata is wrong, fix it.
- Does not resolve → warning sign. Go to step 3.

Step 3: Exact-title search for everything without a DOI (10 minutes)
Books, chapters in edited volumes, dissertations and non-English scholarship often have no DOI. Search the exact title in quotation marks, in this order:
- Google Scholar
- Your university library catalogue
- A union catalogue such as WorldCat or the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog
- For edited volumes: the title of the volume, not the chapter
A title that appears in none of those four very likely does not exist. A title that appears only as a volume but not as a chapter is exactly Lena’s case from the opening. The book is real, the chapter is invented.
Step 4: Read the supporting passages (10 minutes)
Find the places in your text where you cite an S source. For each one: can you open the page and find the sentence that supports your claim?
If not, you have a class 3 error. That one is more awkward than a fabricated title, because it looks deliberate. The difference between the error types is explained in plagiarism vs. misquotation.
Step 5: Reconcile text and list (2 minutes)
Two directions, both matter:
- Does every source cited in the text appear in the bibliography?
- Does the bibliography contain a source that appears nowhere in the text?
The second case is more common than you would think, usually leftovers from an earlier outline. It reads as a padded bibliography and costs points.
The AI trap: what changed in 2026
The classic reference error used to be a transposed digit. Today it is the source that never existed.
A study by Rossiter analysed 2,300 AI-generated references. 71 per cent of them were faulty: wrong authors, wrong years, or invented outright. And here is the awkward part: fabricated sources look better than real ones. They have plausible titles, credible author names, and they fit the topic perfectly. That is exactly why people copy them without checking.
Marco, a fourth-semester business student, had a term paper on supply chain resilience due in January. He asked a chatbot for five studies to support his theory section. Four existed. The fifth, a supposed article in the Journal of Supply Chain Management from 2021, was entirely invented: author, title, page numbers, all of it. He had used it as the central reference for his core claim. His marker spotted it in two minutes, because she subscribes to that journal herself.
What follows from this: if a source in your bibliography came out of an AI chat, treat it as unverified, even when the model displayed a web page as evidence. There is a formal side too. On 25 February 2026 the Administrative Court of Kassel ruled in two cases that undeclared AI use may be treated as serious academic misconduct; one of the two concerned a master’s-level term paper. What plagiarism software does not check
This is where most term papers are protected against the wrong thing.

Turnitin, PlagScan and Ouriginal compare your text against a database of other texts. A fabricated source has no foreign text to match against. It therefore passes every plagiarism scan, with a clean report.

When to check
The check is only useful while you can still act on it. Two days before the deadline you can delete a fabricated source, but you can no longer rebuild the argument that rested on it.

The first slot matters most. Check right after your research and a fabricated source costs you ten minutes of replacement work. Check at the end and it costs you a chapter.
Common special cases
Lecture slides. The most common source in term papers and the most common formatting error. Whether you may cite them at all depends on your field; the rules are in citing lecture slides and handouts.
Secondary citations. “Smith 1998, as cited in Jones 2020” is acceptable when the original is genuinely unobtainable. In a term paper with six weeks of working time, “unobtainable” is read more generously than in a master’s thesis. There are still limits: see using secondary citations correctly.
Wikipedia. Not citable in most fields, but useful as an entry point into the literature. The rule and its exceptions are under Wikipedia as a source.
Web sources without a date. An access date is mandatory, and an archived snapshot protects you if the page disappears before marking. Details under avoiding link rot.
If you work with Zotero or EndNote
A reference manager takes error class 1 off your hands entirely and class 2 halfway. It does not touch class 3 and 4. Quite the opposite: a neatly formatted entry looks verified even though nobody verified it.
Two moves that pay off in five minutes:
- Pull metadata. Right-click an entry, “Retrieve metadata from DOI/ISBN”. Whatever fails to resolve goes straight onto your check list.
- Merge duplicates, do not delete them. Otherwise you lose attachments and notes, and the worse-maintained version is the one that ends up in your bibliography.
