Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to check a term paper bibliography?
For 15 to 25 sources, budget 30 to 45 minutes if you work systematically: resolve every DOI first, then run exact-title searches for whatever has no DOI, then reconcile the text against the list. Without a system the same job takes two hours, because you keep jumping between your document, a browser and your reference manager.
Do I really have to check every source individually?
Every source you never held in your hands. Anything you read in full and quoted from the PDF is already verified. Anything that arrived from a reading list, a lecture slide or a chatbot is not. Those are where the errors sit.
Will my university's plagiarism checker catch a source that does not exist?
No. Turnitin, PlagScan and Ouriginal compare your text against other texts. They check neither whether a cited source is real nor whether it says what you claim. A fabricated source passes every plagiarism scan, because there is no foreign text for it to match against.
What should I do if a source is not findable anywhere?
Not findable does not automatically mean fabricated. Grey literature, dissertations and older non-English titles are often absent from the big databases. Check your university catalogue and a union catalogue such as WorldCat first. If nothing turns up there either and you never saw the source yourself, cut it.
Do I have to declare AI use in a term paper?
That depends on your institution's regulations, not on a universal standard. As of 2026 only about a third of German universities have an institution-wide AI policy, and practice in the UK and US varies just as widely between departments. When in doubt, declare it: documented use is never an attempt to deceive, undocumented use can be.
