Frequently asked questions

Can I cite ChatGPT as a source in my bachelor's thesis?
In almost all cases: no. ChatGPT is not a scholarly source. You may only cite ChatGPT when the AI output itself is your research object — for example, in a linguistic study of AI-generated text or a pedagogical study of how students interact with ChatGPT. Citing it to support a factual claim is not academically defensible.
What happens if I use AI without disclosing it in my thesis?
At most German-speaking universities, undisclosed AI use constitutes an attempt to deceive. Consequences range from a grade reduction to the withdrawal of the degree, depending on severity and your institution's regulations.
What do I have to document when citing ChatGPT legitimately?
You must record: the model and version (e.g. GPT-5, as of March 2026), the exact prompt as entered, the date and time of the query, and the full response — ideally as a verbatim transcript in an appendix. Without the appendix, your source cannot be verified and is scientifically worthless.
