A retracted study is a study that officially no longer exists. The publisher has removed it from the scientific record — usually because of fabricated data, plagiarism, methodological errors, or ethical violations. The PDFs, however, stay online, keep turning up in Google Scholar, and keep getting cited year after year. If one of these ends up in your bachelor’s or master’s thesis, you’re arguing with a claim that science itself has declared invalid. This guide shows you how to prevent that before submission.
What does “retracted” mean?
A retraction is the formal withdrawal of a published article by the publisher. The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) has clear criteria: retraction is the strongest measure and is used when a paper’s findings are no longer reliable — whether from honest error or misconduct.
There are three related but distinct stages:
- Correction (erratum, corrigendum). The article remains valid; specific errors are fixed. Usually harmless.
- Expression of Concern. The publisher has substantiated doubts but cannot (yet) issue a retraction. A strong warning signal.
- Retraction. The study is withdrawn. It can no longer serve as evidence for its original claim.
Important: a retracted paper is rarely deleted. It stays online, often with a “RETRACTED” watermark on every page — and anyone who downloads the PDF without visiting the publisher page never sees it.
Why retracted papers are a student problem
Retractions aren’t an academic edge case. The Retraction Watch Database lists over 55,000 withdrawn articles; in 2023 alone about 10,000 retractions were recorded — more than any previous year. Four consequences hit thesis writers directly:
- Google Scholar doesn’t flag retractions prominently. The retraction notice appears only on the publisher’s page. Downloads via ResearchGate, SciHub, or PDF repositories usually strip it out.
- Retracted papers keep collecting citations. Studies show that a withdrawn paper picks up an additional six to twelve citations per year — from authors who never noticed the retraction.
- The publisher doesn’t tell you. If you downloaded a study in 2023 and it gets retracted in 2025, your PDF folder won’t warn you. Zotero and Mendeley have added retraction warnings, but only if you enable them.
- Supervisors increasingly check digitally. More and more departments run thesis bibliographies against the Retraction Watch Database. A retracted paper in your reference list reads like a plagiarism hit: it demands explanation, and it costs grades.
The three most common retraction reasons
So you can judge whether a retraction affects your argument:
- Data manipulation or fabrication (around 40 % of retractions). The results are simply not real. Anyone relying on them is citing fiction.
- Duplicate publication or plagiarism (around 20 %). The content may be correct, but it was published without permission or multiple times. Citability is disputed.
- Methodological errors or non-reproducible results (around 20 %). Authors withdraw themselves because the analysis was flawed. The claim no longer holds.

How to find retracted papers in your bibliography
Before submission, a retraction check belongs in the same category as a plagiarism check: once at the end, systematically, for every source.
1. Retraction Watch Database
retractiondatabase.org — the central resource, operated since 2018 by The Center for Scientific Integrity, and hosted by Crossref since 2023. Search by DOI, title, or author. Free, no login required. For each of your sources, copy the DOI, paste, verify.
2. Crossref Retraction API
Crossref flags retractions directly on the DOI record (is-retracted: true). If you use Zotero or EndNote, these warnings run automatically — provided you’ve enabled the feature:
- Zotero: since version 6 there’s a “Retracted Items” collection. A red-marked entry = retraction. Updates with “Sync”.
- EndNote 20+: a retraction icon appears on the entry when Crossref flags it.
- Citavi: no native retraction feature (as of 2026). Check externally.
3. PubPeer
pubpeer.com is a comment platform where researchers publicly discuss doubts about published articles. Not every PubPeer entry leads to a retraction, but many retractions start there. If one of your sources has multiple critical PubPeer comments, review the reasoning before citing.
4. Scite.ai
scite.ai classifies every citation of a study as “supporting”, “contrasting”, or “mentioning” — and flags retracted papers clearly. Paid for full access; many universities hold a license.
5. PubMed filter (life sciences)
For biomedical sources: PubMed labels retracted papers directly in the results list (“Retracted Publication”). For medical or biological theses, PubMed is the easiest second check.
A practical checking routine
Two or three days before submission:
- Collect all DOIs. Export the bibliography as BibTeX or CSV and extract the DOI column.
- Open the Zotero / EndNote Retracted filter. If you use the software, retractions show up in under a minute.
- Cross-check with Retraction Watch Database. Some new retractions take a few days to reach Crossref — Retraction Watch is usually faster.
- For grey literature (preprints, reports) check manually. Preprint servers (arXiv, bioRxiv, SSRN) mark withdrawn preprints separately — the preprint’s own page shows it.
Budget roughly 30 minutes for 40 to 60 sources.
What to do if you already cited a retracted study
Panic doesn’t help. Work through it:
Case 1: retraction for methodological errors or data fabrication
The claim can no longer be supported. Delete the citation and find a replacement source. If your argument rests centrally on the study, the section needs rebuilding — but better now than during your oral exam.
Case 2: retraction for duplicate publication or authorship dispute
The content may still be valid. Check whether the authors published the same material in a legitimate paper — Retraction Watch often links to the valid version. Replace the citation with the valid one.
Case 3: you want to discuss the retraction on purpose
It’s legitimate to cite a retracted paper if the retraction itself is your topic — for example, in a chapter on the reproducibility crisis. In that case cite the study with a “(retracted)” tag and link the retraction notice. Example:
Wakefield et al. (1998, retracted 2010) posited a link between the MMR vaccine and autism, later shown to rest on data manipulation.
Famous examples — studies that still show up in bibliographies
Retractions you may run into across many fields:
- Wakefield et al. (1998) — MMR vaccine / autism, retracted 2010 by The Lancet after data manipulation was proven. Still around 6,000 citations after the retraction.
- Schön et al. (early 2000s) — physics, fabricated semiconductor experiments. 25 papers retracted between 2002 and 2003.
- Boldt et al. (2010s) — anesthesiology, over 90 retractions for invented data.
- Frontiers in Psychology wave 2023 — 90+ retractions due to “compromised peer review”. Frequently cited in psychology and education theses.
If you’re writing in medicine, psychology, or the social sciences, there’s a real chance at least one citation chain in your bibliography traces back to one of these studies.
Is citing a retracted study automatically plagiarism?
No. Citing a retracted paper is not plagiarism and not an academic-integrity violation. It’s a source error: you’re supporting a claim with a source that no longer supports it. Formally the citation is correct — but in substance the source no longer backs your claim. Supervisors treat this as a methodological weakness, not fraud.
Retraction checks belong in the writing process
Checking one day before submission may still turn up retractions — but leaves no time to rebuild the argument. Two simple habits defuse the problem:
- Enable Zotero’s retraction warning (Preferences → General → “Warn me about retracted items”). You’ll see a retraction the moment you add the entry, not at the end.
- Cross-check every new DOI against the Retraction Watch Database. Ten seconds per source.
